Screen Shot 2015-12-03 at 17.53.55The Open Institute is happy to release our thinking on the achievement of the Global Goals – 17 Sustainable Development Goals that World Leaders committed on at the UN General Assembly in September this year. These goals are made to guide global development over the next 15 years and range from ending extreme poverty and hunger, providing quality education and health as well as peace and inclusiveness.

The biggest premise of OI’s position is that we can best achieve the SDGs when we involve citizen at local level in small communities of a few thousand people. It is easier, we feel, to identify specific households with specific needs and therefore to address them at village level than it is to support hundreds of thousands of households at national level. Certainly monitoring and evaluation can be better done at local level.

We have included in the document the six big lessons that we have learnt in the past couple of years of our work – working at subnational levels.
