Open Duka wins Oscars

honesty

We are so excited to find out that Open Duka has won the Honesty Oscars (Special Effects category), following nominations and widespread voting.

Like the Academy Awards’ “Best Special Effects” this category honors new technologies, innovative strategies and tools, and creative campaigns that (in our context) call attention to issues of transparency, accountability and corruption.

We are gratified to note that people Kenya, East Africa and the world over overwhelmingly raised their voices to vote for this project that has been a labor of love for the team at the Open Institute.

To our partners: Government of Kenya, Kenya Law, the Africa Technology & Transparency Initiative team (and all of Hivos and the Omidyar Network), thank you for your continued support. We could never have done it without you.

To everyone that voted, Thank you for supporting our work and we promise, we will not stop.

Coming Up Next

The Open Duka team shall be working with the Sunlight Foundation will be working together on  a new research project to explore and analyze the social impact of open data globally, using Open Duka as a Case. The goal of this research is to build a strong evidence base that might empower further generalizations and to develop a few potential theories of change that capture the nuances, complexity and messiness of this broad agenda. With generous support from the Open Data for Development. Research Fund of the OGP Open Data Working Group, our research aims to identify the factors that increase the likelihood that open data initiatives such as Open Duka will achieve their stated goals in a particular context.
